OPINION: Many of us “freedom fighters” from around the world awoke this morning to a sense of frustration and disappointment in the outcome of the 2024 Presidential Election, with the habitual liar and abuser re-elected to the post of the President of the United States (POTUS). As the 47th elected President, Mr. Trump is a baffling choice to run the country. How can a documented law breaker enact laws? How can a documented tax cheat, set tax laws for the rest of us? The litany of lies, racism, threats and dementia is beyond the pale of understanding to lead our country.
While it’s easy to blame the “deplorables,” or the “unwashed masses” or the Trumpers, it’s perhaps equally the fault of the cowards who chose not to vote and abstained from endorsing the only candidate that was the sane and humane choice. In this election, we cannot blame the Electoral College as in past years, as the popular vote seems tilted toward Mr. Trump, sadly.
It looks like white evangelicals, nazis, and catholics all swung toward Trump. A black woman is not on their “likes” list. And the catholics have sadly supported many of the same debaucheries Trump is well known for. This is a tough group to “retrain” to a better path.
While onr of our taglines in America, is the “land of the free and home of the brave,” clearly we will all be less free, particularly women and minorities, and many of us were not brave enough to step up and vote against a petulant madman.
TV pundit, and author, Jon Stewart said last night, “I promise you this is not the end. We have to regroup and we have to continue to fight and continue to work day in and day out to create a better society for our children, for this world, for this country that we know is possible. It’s possible.”
THE STATES THAT VOTED FOR SANITY
Clearly if you wish to live in a safe and sane community in the U.S., that voted against the “orange Hitler,” let this list be your guide to where sanity still exists in this country in 2024:

- Hawaii
- Illinois
- Maine*
- Maryland
- Massachusetts
- Minnesota
- New Hampshire
- New Jersey
- New Mexico
- New York
- Oregon
- Rhode Island
- Vermont
- Virginia
- Washington
If you are in one of the “blue” states, you are more likely to continue to enjoy more basic human rights, while many other parts of the country will be more prone to racism, book banning, putting religion in classrooms, allowing women to die from rape, and many other erosions to basic freedoms all Americans are supposed to have.
Under Kamala Harris we would have had more hope, joy and sanity, with better protections for women, minorities, immigrants, the environment, healthcare and protections for social security and medicare that so many citizens rely on.
Under Trump we can expect four years of lies, racism, lack of understanding of science, the economy and perhaps abolishing healthcare for millions and higher taxes, as well as massive inflation and tarrifs we pay for on daily goods. And random man-baby attacks on citizens, foreign governments and political opponents when his diaper is full.
While some will likely consider my comments “disrespectful,” keep in mind Mr. Trump has done almost nothing to earn the respect of freedom loving Americans.
It’s the beginning of a terrible fallback to an idiocracy none of us deserve. Stay strong fellow freedom fighters. Treat your neighbors well, even if some of them don’t deserve it.
