Assemblymember Al MuratsuchiSACRAMENTO, Calif. /California Newswire/ — Calif. Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi (D-Torrance) today announced that his Assembly Bill (AB) 796 that deals with clean energy technology was signed by Governor Brown.

“This law will continue to allow fair access to natural gas for those clean technology companies that utilize fuel cells,” said Muratsuchi. “It will result in improved air quality and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. I commend Governor Brown for signing this legislation.”

Current law ensures that all customers who generate on-site electricity from natural gas are treated fairly through the establishment of a tariff to access the natural gas supply. However, the tariff for certain clean, advanced electrical generation facilities has a sunset date of January 1, 2014.

AB 796 extends the sunset date from January 2014 to 2016 to allow advanced electrical distributed generation technology, also known as fuel cells, to receive the same gas rate as every other customer that produces electricity from natural gas.

Customers that use natural gas to generate on-site electricity are eligible for a particular gas rate. This bill would continue to ensure that the rate is available for all technologies that generate on-site electricity and allows customers to have a choice of what technologies they wish to use.

This law becomes effective immediately and extends the sunset date.

Assemblymember Muratsuchi represents the 66th Assembly District, which includes the cities of Gardena, Hermosa Beach, Lomita, the Los Angeles communities of Harbor City and Harbor Gateway, Manhattan Beach, Palos Verdes Estates, Rancho Palos Verdes, Redondo Beach, Rolling Hills, Rolling Hills Estates, Torrance and the unincorporated communities of El Camino Village and West Carson.
