CALIFORNIA NEWSWIRE (LOMITA, Calif.) — The City of Lomita CA announced this week it has begun planning the long-term development of the former U.S. Navy ballfields park site, which has served exclusively as the home for the Lomita Little League for decades. Lomita has commissioned design consultants to work with local stakeholders, including the Lomita Little League, to gather input that will help shape the future recreational use of the Navy Fields.

The City has been pursuing the transfer of ownership of the approximately six-acre property at 26800 S. Western Avenue from the U.S. Department of the Navy. The site has served as a home for youth baseball and Lomita Little League for decades. The City was also awarded a $500,000 grant from the Los Angeles County Regional Park and Open Space District through Measure A to support planning and design efforts for the future park space.
“We see this as an opportunity to take a thoughtful, long-term approach to the future of the Navy Fields,” said City Manager Andrew Vialpando. “Working alongside Lomita Little League and community organizations will help the City achieve a shared goal of planning for a recreational facility that can serve the Lomita community and the region for future generations.”
Over the next year, City officials and stakeholders will work together gathering community input and exploring conceptual designs for development of the park. Grant funding and other community contributions are expected to help to support future development of the project. The effort will involve multiple phases, with the scope and timing of future improvements dependent on planning, approvals and available funding.
Said Ian Brewster, president of Lomita Little League, “We look forward to working alongside the City to help shape a facility that honors that legacy while creating new opportunities for recreation and community connection.”
As planning moves forward, the City will provide opportunities for residents and community organizations to share their perspectives on the future of the site. Community feedback will help inform the development of conceptual designs and the City’s long-term planning efforts.
