Montebello, Calif. /California Newswire/ — State Senator Ron Calderon announced his campaign for Congress today. Calderon will run in California’s newly created 38th Congressional District, which includes the cities of Artesia, Bellflower, Cerritos, Hawaiian Gardens, La Mirada, Lakewood, Montebello, Norwalk, Pico Rivera, Santa Fe Springs, South El Monte, Whittier, and portions of unincorporated Los Angeles County.

“I have spent the last nine years as an effective and enthusiastic champion for job creation and economic development in this community,” Senator Calderon said. “This new Congressional District, in an area historically represented by my family, will give me the opportunity to advocate for the Gateway Cities and the San Gabriel Valley on a national stage. I am incredibly excited to be launching this campaign.”

Senator Calderon has represented around 70% of the new district in the California State Senate for the past four and a half years. He has more overlap in the newly created district than any other State Legislator or Member of Congress. Senator Calderon will file paperwork with the Federal Election Commission to formally launch his campaign later this week.

Senator Calderon won election to the 58th Assembly District in 2002. He was re-elected in 2004 and won one of the closest and most expensive State Senate primary campaigns in California history in 2006. Senator Calderon, who has never lost an election, was re-elected to the State Senate in November 2010. He chairs the influential Insurance Committee, and the Select Committee on Film and Television Industries. He is presently a member of the Select Committees on Economic Development, Governmental Organization, Public Safety and Veteran’s Affairs. Senator Calderon is also a member of the California Film Commission, and he is Vice Chair of the California Latino Caucus. Prior to his election to state office, Senator Calderon served as a manager in the manufacturing industry, mortgage banker, real estate agent and small business owner.

Senator Calderon comes from a family of local public servants that have represented the San Gabriel Valley in some capacity for most of the last 30 years. His brother, Charles Calderon, has served in the State Legislature for over twenty years and is the first person to serve as Majority Leader of both the State Senate and State Assembly. He is a former Montebello Unified School District Board Member and State Senator, and he currently serves as Assembly Majority Leader. Senator Calderon’s brother, Tom Calderon, is a former Montebello Unified School District Board Member and California State Assemblymember. Senator Calderon’s sister-in-law, Marcella Calderon, is currently serving as a member of the Montebello Unified School District Board.
