SACRAMENTO, Calif. /California Newswire/ — On behalf of all Californians, Governor Brown and First Lady Anne Gust Brown honor Staff Sgt. Nigel D. Kelly, who bravely gave his life in service to our state and nation. The Governor and First Lady extend their deepest condolences to his family and friends at this difficult time.

In memorial, Governor Brown ordered that flags be flown at half-staff over the State Capitol today. Staff Sgt. Kelly’s family will receive a letter of condolence from the Governor.

Staff Sgt. Nigel D. Kelly, 26, of Menifee, CA, died June 25, in Kunar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using small arms fire. He was assigned to 3rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, HI. Kelly was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
