SACRAMENTO, Calif. /California Newswire/ — Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today issued the following statement regarding the death of Cottonwood Fire Protection District Captain Mark Ratledge:

“Anne and I were saddened to learn of the death of Captain Mark Ratledge. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and fellow firefighters.”

Captain Mark Ratledge, 35, of Cottonwood, was fatally injured at the scene of a vehicle accident along Interstate 5 south of Anderson in Shasta County. He was a nine-year veteran of the Cottonwood Fire Protection District. A California Highway Patrol officer and a civilian motorist were also injured in the incident.

Captain Ratledge is survived by his fiancee, Jennifer Hobbs, daughter, Sophia, stepdaughter, Hannah and stepson, Conner. Mark is also survived by a sister, Susana Ratledge, of Stockton, and parents, Jack Ratledge and Maria Closa, both of Redding.

In honor of Captain Ratledge, Capitol flags will be flown at half-staff.
