SACRAMENTO, Calif. /California Newswire/ — Today, Calif. Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. announced the following appointments related to transportation in California: First, Yvonne Burke, 80, of Los Angeles, has been appointed to the California Transportation Commission, where she has served since 2010.
Burke served as supervisor for Los Angeles County from 1992 to 2008. She was a partner at Jones, Day, Reavis and Pogue from 1987 to 1992 and partner at Burke, Robinson and Pearman from 1982 to 1987. Burke was supervisor of the Los Angeles County 4th district from 1979 to 1982, a representative in the United States House of Representatives from 1972 to 1978, a member in the California State Assembly from 1967 to 1972 and a member of the Regents of the University of California from 1986 to 1992. Burke is a member of the Amtrak Board of Directors. Burke earned a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Southern California Gould School of Law. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Burke is a Democrat.
Joseph Tavaglione, 89, of Riverside, has been appointed to the California Transportation Commission, where he has served since 2002. Tavaglione has been president of Tavaglione Construction and Development Inc. since 1962. He is a member of the University of California, Riverside Foundation Board of Trustees. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Tavaglione is a Republican.
David Connolly, 48, of Alameda, has been appointed to the State Board of Pilot Commissioners for the Bays of San Francisco, San Pablo and Suisun. Connolly has been vice president of the Sailors’ Union of the Pacific since 2000. He was an operator with the San Francisco Bar Pilots from 1996 to 2000 and was an able seaman at Chevron Shipping Company from 1991 to 1996. Connolly is a trustee for the Sailors’ Union of the Pacific Welfare Plan and is president of the Alameda Labor Council. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $600 per month. Connolly is registered decline-to-state.
Joseph Long, 37, of San Rafael, has been appointed to the State Board of Pilot Commissioners for the Bays of San Francisco, San Pablo and Suisun. Long has been a pilot with the San Francisco Bar Pilots since 2008, where he was an apprentice pilot from 2007 to 2008. He was a tugboat captain at Westar Marine Services in 2006 and from 1999 to 2004 and at Foss Maritime from 2004 to 2006. Long was a senior boat operator at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography from 1998 to 1999. This position requires Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Long is registered decline-to-state.
Steven Roberts, 58, of San Ramon, has been appointed to the State Board of Pilot Commissioners for the Bays of San Francisco, San Pablo and Suisun, where he has served since 2009. Roberts has been a pilot with the San Francisco Bar Pilots since 1985. He was an independent docking pilot from 1981 to 1985 and worked in marine operations at Shell Oil Company from 1979 to 1981. Roberts was a deck officer at Exxon Shipping Company from 1977 to 1981. He is the chair of the Pilot Fitness Committee of the State Board of Pilot Commissioners for the Bays of San Francisco, San Pablo and Suisun. This position requires Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Roberts is a Democrat.
John Schneider, 51, of Benicia, has been appointed to the State Board of Pilot Commissioners for the Bays of San Francisco, San Pablo and Suisun. Schneider has held various positions for Tesoro Corporation since 2006, including single point mooring operations manager and northern California marine superintendent. He was a port captain at Golden Eagle Refinery from 2006 to 2008. Schneider was a ship’s officer at both the Alaska Tanker Company from 1999 to 2006 and at the Overseas Shipholding Group from 1989 to 1999. This position requires Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Schneider is registered decline-to-state.
