WASHINGTON, D.C. /California Newswire/ — U.S. Rep. Tony Cárdenas (D-San Fernando Valley, Calif.) released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s decision to hear an appeal of the Fifth Circuit’s ruling that continues to block implementation of the Deferred Action to Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA) and expanded Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) programs:
“Finally, immigrant families will have their day in court. President Obama’s immigration executive actions were the only possible fix for our broken immigration system, as long as Republican leadership in Congress refused to take up Comprehensive Immigration Reform. DACA and DAPA keep families together and allow law-abiding men and women who want to improve our country to do so with work permits. The Supreme Court has a responsibility to remove the block to implementation of these programs.
“President Obama has well-established constitutional authority on his side, taken by prior presidents of both parties. While the court deliberates, I will continue to work with my colleague’s to bring forth comprehensive immigration reform. I am confident that the Supreme Court will do the right thing and unfreezes DAPA and DACA expansion to allow hard working families to come out of the shadows, create jobs and expand our economy.”
Since 2012 DACA has provided 640,000 young people the possibility to use their talents to move our country forward, including two exceptional DACA-beneficiaries who interned in Rep. Cárdenas’ office. They will soon be graduating from California Universities.
