SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. /California Newswire/ — On Tuesday, S.F. Mayor Edwin M. Lee announced that San Francisco, in partnership with the San Francisco 49ers and a San Francisco Bay Area regional bid committee, will submit a formal bid to the National Football League (NFL) to host Super Bowl L in 2016. The NFL officially invited San Francisco and Miami, Florida, home to the Dolphins, to submit a bid today to compete in hosting the 50th Super Bowl.
At the request of Mayor Lee, Daniel Lurie, Founder and CEO of the Tipping Point Community, will lead the regional bid committee and assemble the City’s bid. The game, which would be held at the 49ers new stadium in Santa Clara, would bring hundreds of millions in revenue for the entire host region.
“There’s no better place to play host to the Super Bowl and celebrate one of our greatest sports than San Francisco and the Bay Area,” said Mayor Lee. “San Francisco has proven time and again that we know how to host the world for major events and shine on the international stage. A Super Bowl in the Bay Area will bring an enormous economic boost to our entire region and leave a lasting legacy for Bay Area youth. Lurie submitted San Francisco’s application to the NFL’s Super Bowl Advisory Committee on August 9, 2012. The Super Bowl Bid Committee will deliver its bid package to NFL owners on May 7, 2013. On May 21st, San Francisco will formally present its bid in a live pitch to the 32 NFL owners in Boston.
The NFL also announced that the city not selected to host Super Bowl L will be invited to submit a second bid to host Super Bowl LI in 2017, competing against Houston.
