CHARLOTTE, N.C., Nov. 24, 2011 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Dick Sesler’s longtime dream continues to be reality! This October in the foothills of North Carolina, Camp Blue Skies held the third successful camp for adults with intellectual disabilities.
With 60 campers, we filled the gap for a population that has few recreational opportunities offered to them once they are out of the school system. The weeklong residential camp experience has a profound impact and life changing effect on not only campers, but caregivers, counselors and volunteers.
Our mission is to enhance the lives of adults with developmental and cognitive disabilities by providing opportunities for life skills education through recreation and socialization. We do that in a safe, fun and rewarding camp environment.
Like many traditional camps, the first night of camp kicks off with s’mores by the campfire and shared stories. The last night culminates in a fun-filled dance. Depending on the camp location, we have a variety of activities such as riding the zipline and giant swing, or enjoying arts and crafts, “fun with food”, drumming, hiking, dance, ceramics, or field games. The camper to counselor ratio is approximately 2:1, with 3 volunteer counselors (including one who has experience with the population) present in each cabin.
Our next camp session is Camp Blue Skies-Atlanta, and will be held March 12-16, 2012 in Rutledge, GA at Camp Twin Lakes. Please visit our website www.campblueskies.org if you are interested in volunteering or know of a camper that would like to attend camp.
In order to continue providing campers this extraordinary experience, Camp Blue Skies looks to individual donors, foundations, and local businesses for the financial assistance to help offset camp expenses to ensure no camper is turned away for financial reasons.
At this time, we are launching our Annual Campaign and ask our supporters to consider making a gift to Camp Blue Skies Foundation. Please visit our website www.campblueskies.org to donate online, or learn more about how you can get involved as a camper or volunteer.
