SACRAMENTO, Calif. /California Newswire/ — The Legislature’s Joint Committee on Rules, Subcommittee on Sexual Harassment Prevention and Response will hold its second working hearing February 15, 2018. The Subcommittee is laying the groundwork for developing new, bicameral policies and procedures for preventing and responding to sexual harassment complaints.
“Over the next month, we’ll be holding frequent hearings because the task before us is both urgent, and in need of thorough examination,” said Subcommittee Chair Assemblymember Laura Friedman (D-Glendale). “Our goal is to provide our committee membership with the information we need to craft solutions that are both innovative and durable. This is our chance to establish an effective new model and we’re determined to get it right.”
Sen. Holly J. Mitchell (D-Los Angeles), Vice Chair for the Subcommittee, said the panel’s work must be seen as part of a long-term effort to change the overall culture of the Legislature and ensure the safety of all legislative employees and others in the Capitol.
The February 15 hearing will feature two panels. A panel on legal perspectives will include Andrea Johnson, National Women’s Law Center; Wendy Musell, California Employment Lawyers Association; and Lizbeth “Beth” West, Weintraub Tobin.
A second panel on the challenges of making policies work will feature Kathleen Reardon, USC Marshall School of Business, and Ann Ravel, UC Berkeley School of Law, formerly Chair of the Fair Political Practices Commission.
The Subcommittee has been charged with making recommendations to be adopted by the Joint Rules Committee and both houses of the Legislature. It held its first hearing January 24.
The hearing will be held at 9:30 a.m. in Room 4203 of the Capitol.
