Calif Gov BrownSACRAMENTO, Calif. /California Newswire/ — Today, Calif. Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. issued the following statement regarding the death of Hawthorne Police Department Sergeant Leonard Luna. “Anne and I are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic death of Sergeant Leonard Luna. We join his family, friends, colleagues and community as they mourn his loss and remember his courageous and dedicated service to the city of Hawthorne.”

Luna, 41, died Monday following a collision in the city of Lynwood while en route to pick up his departmentally assigned motorcycle. He was transported to Saint Francis Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

A resident of Long Beach, Sgt. Luna was a 10-year veteran of the Hawthorne Police Department. Prior to joining the police department, he worked in private security.

Sgt. Luna is survived by his father, Leonard R. Luna, and mother, Celia, both of Torrance, and brother, Joseph R. Luna of Lakewood.

In honor of Sgt. Luna, Capitol flags will be flown at half-staff.
