SACRAMENTO, Calif. /California Newswire/ — This past Friday (May 10), Calif. Governor Gavin Newsom today announced the following appointments: First, Angela Barranco, 39, of Los Angeles, has been appointed undersecretary of the California Natural Resources Agency.
Barranco has been chief executive officer for River LA since 2018. She was senior vice president for Better World Group Inc. from 2017 to 2018 and deputy director of the Climate Action Campaign from 2016 to 2017. Barranco was associate director of public engagement for climate and environment for the White House Council on Environmental Quality from 2014 to 2016. She was deputy chief of staff at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development from 2013 to 2014. Barranco was national western director for Obama for America from 2011 to 2012 and campaign manager for Carnahan in Congress from 2010 to 2011. She served as communications director in the Office of U.S. Representative Ciro Rodriguez from 2007 to 2008 and was legislative director in the Office of the Yonkers City Council President in 2006. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $190,008. Barranco is a Democrat.
Thomas Gibson, 51, of Sacramento, has been appointed deputy secretary and special counsel for water at the California Natural Resources Agency, where he has been undersecretary since 2016 and served as general counsel from 2014 to 2016. Gibson was general counsel at the California Department of Fish and Wildlife from 2008 to 2014. He was a partner at Best, Best, & Krieger from 2002 to 2008. Gibson was an associate at Hyman, Phelps & McNamara from 1999 to 2002 and at Kronick, Moskovitz, Tiedemann & Girard from 1997 to 1999. He earned a Juris Doctor degree from the Northwestern School of Law of Lewis and Clark College. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $185,004. Gibson is registered without party preference.
