SAN FERNANDO, Calif. /California Newswire/ — In Washington, D.C., as part of his commitment to find ways to employ our nation’s brave Veterans, U.S. Rep. Tony Cárdenas (D-San Fernando Valley, Calif.) today reintroduced bipartisan legislation that will allow American consumers to have a better understanding of which companies are most effective at hiring Veterans.
The Honoring the Hiring of Heroes (HHH) Act, H.R. 3919, will instruct the Secretary of Labor to create special recognition awards for employers who have verified employment practices that are Veteran-friendly.
“Our Veterans are volunteers who have made the sacrifices needed to protect this country and our way of life,” said Cárdenas. “For some companies, talking a good game about hiring Vets is a way to get good press. For others, it is a commitment they make to the men and women who have committed so much to us. The free market is based on information, and consumers deserve to know which companies make a special effort to not forget our Veterans.”
Currently, no official metric for Veterans employment has been created to let Americans know which companies put our Veterans back to work when they return from serving our country.
To fix that, the HHH Act will authorize the Secretary of Labor to distribute an award known as the “Employment Salute Award” to eligible businesses that demonstrate a track record of Veteran employment. All recipients of the award will be listed in a section of the Department of Labor’s website and will be exemplified for their work. The Employment Salute Award will not have a monetary value. It will be solely for recognition.
Cárdenas was joined in introducing the bipartisan legislation Reps. Radewagen, Brownley, Jolly, Butterfield, Tim Ryan, Blumenauer, Sanford Bishop, Walter Jones, Jackson Lee, Serrano, Chu, Honda, Garamendi, Napolitano, Veasey, Sablan, Bordallo,Kilmer, and Van Hollen.
