SACRAMENTO, Calif. /California Newswire/ — Calif. Assembly Bill (AB) 2188, by Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi (D– Torrance), was approved today by the State Legislature with strong bi-partisan support. The bill now heads to Governor Jerry Brown for his signature.
AB 2188 requires cities and counties to adopt an ordinance, in consultation with local fire and utility officials, to create an expedited, streamlined permitting and inspection process for residential rooftop solar energy systems that meet building and safety standards.
“AB 2188 is good for jobs, good for business, and good for the environment,” said Assemblymember Muratsuchi. “By cutting down on bureaucratic delays statewide, AB 2188 will promote solar energy, create jobs, and lower the cost of solar installation for consumers. This will help California homeowners go solar to control their electricity bills and generate their own clean energy.”
Local governments, such as the City of Los Angeles, San Jose, Richmond, Oakland, and San Diego County, have demonstrated that the state can reduce permitting time frames while maintaining important safety protections. Further, streamlining the solar permitting process, as mandated by AB 2188, would spur local investments which will result in higher tax revenues and local economic development.
Governor Brown has until September 30 to sign the bill into law.
Assemblymember Muratsuchi represents the 66th Assembly District, which includes the cities of Gardena, Hermosa Beach, Lomita, the Los Angeles communities of Harbor City and Harbor Gateway, Manhattan Beach, Palos Verdes Estates, Rancho Palos Verdes, Redondo Beach, Rolling Hills, Rolling Hills Estates, Torrance and the unincorporated El Camino Village.
