Friends for Youth to Hold 20th Annual Golf Challenge Fundraiser on October 8, 2007 to Support its Mentoring Program for Youth in Need

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. — Golfers from all over the Bay Area will tee off to support Friends for Youth a nonprofit mentoring organization as the agency marks the 20th year of its Annual Golf Challenge at the exclusive Sharon Heights Golf and Country Club in Menlo Park. A full field of golfers is expected to attend this milestone event – Friends For Youth’s most important fundraiser of the year.

Last year nearly $100,000 was raised in support of the Friends for Youth mentoring program for at-risk youth.

“For 20 years the Peninsula Golf Challenge has significantly impacted the funding for our program which support youth in need in our community. We are fortunate to have many golfers who return year after year to support our organization,” says Rebecca Cooper, Executive Director of Friends for Youth. “This year is so special, marking the 20th Anniversary.”

Returning as emcee once again, Mr. C in Heaven, a well-known Howard Cosell reincarnate will “tell it like it is.” Thoroughly enjoyed by attendees last year, Mr. C uses his immense knowledge of the sporting world and of certain guests to entertain as only he can. The live auction following dinner will also be led by the inimitable Mr. C .

For 28 years, the Friends for Youth mentoring program has been matching volunteer adults one-to-one with at-risk youth. Over 1,650 at-risk youth have been matched with a nearly 90% success rate – far above the national average.

The Friends for Youth program has been shown to reduce the incidence of risk behaviors, increase positive behavior, improve self-concept and increase future opportunities for the good of the individual and the community.
