LOS ANGELES, Calif. /California Newswire/ — Today, Assemblymember Isadore Hall, III (D-Los Angeles) released the following statement in response to U.S. District Judge Dean Pregerson’s ruling that Los Angeles County’s 2012 voter approved initiative, Measure B, requiring condoms in adult films is constitutional.

Isadore Hall III“Judge Pregerson’s ruling on the constitutionality of Measure B reaffirms my long held belief and the opinion of an overwhelming majority of Los Angeles County voters that a safe workplace is not only constitutional, it is good for the industry, good for workers and good for the public’s health.

“The adult film industry is an important part of Los Angeles’ and California’s economy. This industry, given the type of work required, disproportionately exposes actors to a range of health and safety risks. The industry has been largely self-regulated and has done an inadequate job of protecting its employees from disease infection. Judge Pregerson’s ruling correctly affirms that while actors are free to express themselves, adult film producers cannot put porn profits above worker safety.

“When it comes down to it, adult film actors are employees, like any other employee for any other business in the state. A minimum level of safety in the workplace should not have to be negotiated. We have an obligation to ensure that all workers, regardless of the type of work, are protected from workplace hazards and injury.

“Earlier this year, I authored AB 332 which would require frequent testing of sexually transmitted diseases and condom use in adult films produced in California. This measure was temporarily held while the federal courts addressed the question of constitutionality. The court’s ruling has put the question of constitutionality to rest. With only a few weeks left of the legislative session, I am committed to working with legislative leaders and the Governor to move forward with legislation that will protect adult film workers throughout California.”
