SACRAMENTO, Calif. /California Newswire/ — Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today announced the appointment of Charles A. Smiley III to a judgeship in the Alameda County Superior Court.

Smiley, 44, of Oakland, has been a court commissioner for the Alameda County Superior Court since 2007. He served as a deputy public defender in the Alameda County Public Defender’s Office from 1997 to 2007 and was an associate adjunct professor at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law from 2004 to 2007.

He has been on the board of directors for the Wiley Manuel Law Foundation since 2005. Smiley earned a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Berkeley. He fills the vacancy created by the resignation of Judge Paul D. Fogel. Smiley is registered decline-to-state.

The compensation for this position is $178,789.
