DETROIT, Mich. (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Every day American citizens are being legally given prescription medications for injuries and illnesses, but given the abuse potential many wind up getting hooked on these drugs and moving on to street drugs to feed their habits. This was the topic of an interview that aired today on the Rick Sanchez show on CNN. Why Heroin Is Rampant was the title of the interview and it featured Narconon Graduate, Dominick Assante, who personally struggled with this very type of addiction before completing the Narconon drug rehab program several years ago.

Mr. Assante appeared on the CNN News program to tell his story of addiction and recovery and how several years ago he was prescribed VICOPROPHEN(R); a mixture of Vicoden(R) and ibuprofen, after a dental surgery and got addicted to this drug. During the time Mr. Assante was taking these prescription pain pills, he hurt his back and was sent to a general practitioner by his dentist and was then prescribed OxyContin(R).

By this time Dominick was so hooked that he soon switched to heroin as a cheaper and easier way to get his high. He was a heroin addict and IV user for three years and used up to 10 bags per day of the drug until a family member suggested he go to the Narconon drug and alcohol rehabilitation program.

As a result of successful treatment and hard work on his part, Mr. Assante has been free from drugs for 8 years. He currently is a staff member at Narconon Freedom Center in Albion, Michigan.

The Narconon program is a long-term, residential drug and alcohol rehabilitation program that achieves a more than 70 percent success rate with all hard-core addictions. The program has been helping addicts around the world for more than 40 years and through its treatment program in Michigan for more than 7 years.

Dominick’s warning to people while on the Rick Sanchez show that are being handed prescriptions was simple; “You’re in big trouble,” he says. “I wouldn’t take them.” And big trouble is what many Americans have found themselves in who start abusing prescriptions.

The National Survey on Drug Use and Health reported that there were 6.9 million persons aged 12 or older who used prescription-type psychotherapeutic drugs non-medically in the past month. Of these, 5.2 million used pain relievers.
